LUCY MCELROY
Based in Lincoln, Lucy McElroy is an emerging contemporary artist whose work interrogates the "curated perfection" of early 20th-century cinema and photography. After graduating from the University of Leeds with a degree in Fine Art, McElroy spent nearly two decades teaching and building a successful portrait practice—a foundation that deeply informs her masterful figurative technique.
Her current practice explores female archetypes, referencing historical icons and the complex contradictions they embodied. By replacing the demure, averted eyes typical of the era with a confrontational gaze, McElroy empowers each subject with the strength and awareness to be an active participant in their own portraits. When they meet the viewer's gaze, they challenge us to objectify them, fully conscious of their position in the history of the muse.
Driven by a love for material experimentation, McElroy has developed an original mixed-media process that captures the soft-focused aesthetics and luminous, ethereal qualities of vintage silver-gelatin prints. The resulting works are both technically rich and conceptually striking, bridging the gap between traditional figurative mastery and contemporary critique.
